Midnight Til Morning’s “Anything” Is the Earworm You Didn’t Know You Needed
Some songs grow on you slowly. “Anything” grabs you in the first five seconds. That opening guitar riff took me straight back to the intro of One Direction’s “Live While We’re Young.” It’s not a copy, but if you grew up on that era of pop, you’ll feel it right away. From there, Midnight Til Morning lands somewhere between One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer, with the big, glossy chorus of the former and the pop-punk bounce of the latter. It sounds familiar without feeling like a throwback act, and good luck getting it out of your head afterward.
Part of what makes the song work is how well it shows off the four voices behind it. The band came together on Netflix’s Building the Band, where groups were formed on vocals alone, no faces involved, and they finished fourth. Australians Conor Smith and Mason Watts teamed up with Americans Shane Appell and Zach Newbould, and all four came in as solo singer-songwriters. “Anything” gives each of them a moment. Conor opens the song and leads the first verse, then returns for the bridge, so he’s the one setting the scene and turning it. Mason takes the pre-choruses, and his playful, flirty delivery is the hook that has you waiting for the chorus to drop. Shane joins Conor and Mason on the chorus, which is where the song really lifts off, and Zach’s second verse is a nice change of pace that keeps things moving. When all four come together for the group harmonies and the final chorus, it’s easy to see why this lineup clicked.
The story is simple and sweet: a guy gets a girl’s number from a friend of a friend, sends the nervous text anyway, and then waits to see what happens. The chorus is a lovestruck, all-in plea to take whatever she’s willing to give, whether that’s one good night or something much longer. It’s cheeky and a little desperate in the best way, and it suits the song’s bright energy perfectly.
Midnight Til Morning is clearly being built to last, too. Their debut single “Bye” was co-written with Benson Boone, Amy Allen, Scott Harris and Elie Rizk, alongside the band themselves, and they’re signed to Chugg Music. They’ve spent the time since 2025 touring and playing surprise shows, so the buzz comes from actually showing up for fans.
In the end, “Anything” is a band playing to its strengths. The melody is instant, the chorus begs to be sung back at a crowd, and the production keeps everything crisp and fun. By the second chorus I was singing along, and by the end I was hitting replay. If you miss the late-2010s pop-rock wave, this one’s for you, and if you’re new to the band, it’s a great place to start. Midnight Til Morning is one to watch.
