Can’t Forget My English Love Affair with 5SOS
Written by: Nicole Rivera
The curtain drop at any concert is always the most exhilarating part. Seeing the words ‘The 5 Seconds of Summer Show’ flash in front of me added to my excitement and feelings of anticipation. Finally, it drops to reveal Michael, Luke, Calum and Ashton standing side by side with smiles on their faces. The show has officially started.
Bad Omens is the opening song of the night and has the crowd reminiscing on a past lover. The group is entirely ecstatic, and my ears are ringing from the screams and singing surrounding me. Being able to scream back ‘that’s what you do when you love somebody’ was one of the most freeing experiences ever.
The set continues with a blend of songs from their most recent album, 5SOS5, and their fourth album, CALM. Once Easier comes to an end, nostalgia begins to take over as the first notes of She’s Kinda Hot can be heard. The people around me start jumping and clapping to the beat when the song encourages them to.
Vapor and Waste The Night are two of my favorite songs from the entirety of their discography, so to experience them for this tour was a very thrilling moment. I was able to go back to 2015 for those few minutes and imagine I was a teenager all over again.
The most anticipated part of the night finally came, and it was time to roll the dice for the song of the night. I watch the pit throw around the die and help it make its way back to the stage. Luke then grabs it to see what the result is and moves it to show the words English Love Affair. As one of the only shows to be able to witness this song being played live, I made it justice by screaming throughout the entirety of the song.
You Don’t Go To Parties was another one of my favorites, and the transition from Disconnected to this song added to the enjoyment. During the whole show, I was surrounded by nothing but pure joy and a buzzing crowd. All this energy seemed to be released at a heightened pace when Jet Black Heart played. With Michael Clifford yelling at us to scream louder, there was nothing left to do but just that.
Outer Space/Carry On comes to an end, and the feeling of dread fills me knowing that the last song is about to play. I give my all to the last song, and in that moment, all I feel is love and comfort. Having the chance to experience a band I grew up with live, and being accompanied by my oldest friend, helped me forget anything bad in that moment.
Both the set and production of the show were incredible. From the lights to the noise contest, we had with Ashton, all the energy was nothing but enjoyable. Although I wasn’t even close to the stage, I was still able to feel how much dedication the band had put into all of it. This is undeniably a core memory of mine, and I cannot wait until I’m able to attend more shows for the next tour
