Power Duo Halestorm & I Prevail Take Over Tinley Park

Written by: AJ Bloom

Halestorm & I Prevail brought their co-headlining tour to Tinley Park on 7/21/24, creating an unforgettable experience for rock fans in northern Illinois.

Up first was Halestorm, starting out strong with lead singer Lzzy Hale’s acapella intro to “Raise Your Horns.” Her powerful voice rang throughout the venue like something out of a dream, completely captivating the audience from the moment she walked onstage. I have yet to find another artist with comparable stage presence to that of Lzzy Hale.

Halestorm’s set continued with some of their most highly regarded songs, but a definite standout moment was “Familiar Taste of Poison.” The slow build of the instrumentals combined with the passion in Lzzy’s voice and the song’s profound theme is truly moving. The skill it takes from each band member and the group as a whole to pull off this kind of feat is admirable on many levels.

Not long after this, the band brought the beat back up, and each member had their own drum to play. Seeing the pure joy on all of their faces as they played drums together was something I wish I saw more of in performers. The chemistry between the four of them was evident, even from the farthest corners of the venue.

Next to hit the stage was I Prevail. The Detroit natives took a moment to shout out their appreciation for our ability to put our hockey differences aside for the night, which I found amusing. As someone who hasn’t previously listened to I Prevail much, I appreciated the moment they took to connect with the audience, cracking jokes and humanizing themselves.

Once the connection was established, they performed their cover of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space.” Despite claiming that they don’t like to perform this song, I was blown away by what they delivered. Eric Vanlerberghe’s vocals, specifically in the bridge, were absolutely phenomenal. If you’re looking for a good metal scream, I Prevail has got you covered.

As if Eric’s vocals weren’t impressive enough on their own, Lzzy Hale was brought back onstage for “Can U See Me in the Dark?” and I was floored. Their voices in unison along with I Prevail’s Brian Burkheiser was a trio that was meant to be. This show produced one of the strongest groups of vocalists I’ve had the privilege of experiencing, and it was well worth staying out late on a Sunday night.

Though Eric’s vocals stood out to me initially, Brian had his moment to shine during “Breaking Down.” After a heartfelt speech about how opening up to someone about what you’re going through is always worth it, he led the band through the song beautifully.

Overall, the show was an incredible experience. If you’re able to, I highly recommend catching this tour at one of its final few stops. This night was one to remember, and I am lucky to have had this opportunity.
