The Linda Lindas: Punk for a New Generation

Written by: Lily Nopp

The Linda Lindas still have quite a few shows left on their No Obligation tour and if there’s a stop near you I can not stress how much I recommend going. I was fortunate enough to see them and was blown away by the entire show.

The Tulips opened the night with their darling dances and voices that warmed like a hug. They were followed by the band Be Your Own Pet whose music was as electric as their hairography. The contrasting styles of both openers really complimented the sounds of The Linda Lindas and kept the audience engaged with the performances.

After joining Be Your Own Pet on stage to sing “Hand Grenade” with them, The Linda Lindas make their official entrance by cartwheeling onto the stage. The group of four (Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong, Lucia de la Garza and Mila de la Garza) were clearly ecstatic to play their hometown show at The Novo in Los Angeles. One very unique and incredible thing about this band is that they are all main vocalists and all have their unique flavors to add to their music and performance.

All four have captivating stage presence and they blend to make incredible musicians and performers but the variety to their styles give their discography a nice variety. Eloise embodies the punk spirit, screaming lyrics and jumping across stage while jamming on the bass as Mila’s endearing heart makeup and enthusiasm drums up endless excitement from the crowd!

Lucia's voice reminds me of Disney Channel songs I grew up with in the best way and Bela exudes confidence on the stage and her voice bridges the space between punk and pop.

Some of the songs that particularly stood out to me from this show were Resolution/Revolution and Yo Me Estreso, which at this show was accompanied by Julian Chiu on Trumpet (you were right Eloise- everyone did love Julian Chiu) and the live brassy sound really did add another layer of beauty to the song. The show closer invited the openers to sing Rebel Girl with The Linda Lindas and all three groups singing together sent a powerful message about unity along with really ending the night with a bang.
