Artist Advent Day 13: ADDIE

Written by: Keyali Mikaela

Welcome to Day 13 of Next Wave's Artist Advent Calendar, where we unwrap the stories behind some of the most promising talents in the music industry. Today, we are thrilled to feature ADDIE, the dynamic 20-year-old Filipino-American singer, songwriter, producer, and bassist, Adeline Vamenta.

In a world where music is a vibrant tapestry of emotions and experiences, ADDIE stands out with her anthemic indie-pop/rock tunes that are as captivating as they are deeply personal. With her first single, "Drive Slow," amassing over 2,000,000 streams on Spotify, ADDIE has quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the music scene.

Who are your musical influences or role models?

ADDIE: Currently, I would say Slow Pulp and Alex G have been influencing my more recent songs, but I was listening to a ton of Mitski at the time that I started writing songs, which was around like 2017, 2018. So I'd say she's been a constant influence throughout.

Do you have any advice for other up-and-coming musicians trying to make it in the industry?

Yeah, I would say write music that you believe in and write music that you like, because it's so much easier to keep moving forward when you like your music. And also, it makes it so much easier to keep moving forward when you are playing with friends or people that you like. Makes it a lot more fun.

What are your long-term goals and aspirations?

I've accomplished them all. I'm done. No, I would really love to go on a big tour across the US, and it's a huge goal of mine to tour internationally as well. So I'd say that's the biggest one. Having a tiny desk concert would be cool.

Anything non-music?

I want to be the first female scuba driver to be trapped in a wreck and escape only at the last second.

Many men have done it. Not yet a woman. Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey so far?

Yes. I can. One of the most memorable shows I've played was at Clark University the first time I played there. It was so awesome because the energy that night was just awesome as it is with most college shows because I really love playing them. But it was one of the first shows where multiple people were singing my lyrics along with me and it's always such a special feeling when it happens.

Did you know many people in the crowd?

No. I knew a couple people that went to my high school, but yeah, that was part of it. It was people that I'd never met before. I’ve never been to Clark or anything and that was super cool.

Can you share a little about your creative process and how you come up with new ideas for songs?

Well, I come up with lyrics just throughout the day at any point and I write them in my notes app. Then later on, I will compile them into songs. Lately I've been using a lot of open tunings on guitar to write, which is what I've found to be inspiring at the moment.

What song, ep or album of yours would you recommend to someone who is listening to your music for the first time?

Yes, well the music that I would want to recommend is not out yet, unfortunately. But for now I'd say listen to Crater Lake off of Crater Lake [the album].

And keep an eye out for new music coming soon

Yes, definitely keep an eye out.
