BLACKPINK’s grand return to music after 4 years (BLACKPINK Deadline Mini Album review)
BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA!
This time it isn’t a dream. BLACKPINK, one of the most popular girl groups in K-Pop, have returned after a 4-year hiatus, and fans are ecstatic for this new release.
The mini-album, named DEADLINE, features 5 new songs for Blinks to enjoy: JUMP (Main single), GO (Second single), Me and My, Champion, and Fxxxboy (all b-sides). Read below to see what I think of each of them!
JUMP, as stated before, is the main single for this mini album, and the only one to have Korean lyrics in it. This funky EDM beat is surprisingly good. To be honest, it wasn’t my top favorite at first. It actually took a few listens to make me like it. This song speaks about how Blackpink lights up every single place they go in, showcasing their looks and talent. Its Music Video is not one of BLACKPINK’s best ones, but points out clearly the meaning of the song, with fierce visuals and looks. As Lisa and Jisoo say in the post-chorus, ‘Watch me runnin’ up the place/I’m already stuntin’ and my girls are on the way.’
GO is the second single on DEADLINE. This English song is a mixture of EDM and Pop, and to me, is not the best one Blackpink has released. Why, you ask? It has a very particular sound, and the lyrics are very similar to other songs they did previously. Yes, I can clearly see Blackpink considering themselves as ‘guardian angels’ to their fans, and that’s really nice, but I seem to miss the concepts and songs that the girls did previously.
Now, onto the b-sides of DEADLINE!
Me and My, the second english song in this album, has one of my favorite meanings: girlhood, and the beauty of having friends that understand you. This song has that classic BLACKPINK-vibe (R&B and Pop) that I am missing very much lately, as the lyrics say: ‘We outside every night, just me and my girls, ayy/Way too fine every time, just me and my girls, ayy/Hide your man, we ain’t playin’, just me and my girls, ayy/Droppin’ it, poppin’ it, just me and my girls, ayy, ayy.’
Champion gives me the vibes of an alternative yet Pop type of song, which was really great addition to Blackpink’s discography. Just like Jump, it took me a few listens to enjoy this song…but it’s truly well-done, in my opinion. This song explains how BLACKPINK tell the haters that they are still here to stay and feel like ‘a champion,’ despite the criticism they have been facing in the past year.
The last song in the mini album is also in English, named Fxxxboy, which gives fans another taste of the old Blackpink pop ballads they used to release before they went on hiatus. It reminded me of how ‘You Never Know,’ from their album ‘The Album’ sounded like. Very great listen, and it’s my favorite song on the mini album.
Overall, DEADLINE was great, but I feel like we, as Blinks for many years, deserved a better album from BLACKPINK to us. Still, it’s good to listen to when you want to feel like you are the best girl out there.
Rating: 7/10.
