The Apple Tree at Thalia Hall – Hemlocke Springs
On 5/30/2026, Hemlocke Springs brought The Apple Tree Under the Sea tour to Thalia Hall in Chicago, Illinois. Her theatrics and whimsy were a breath of fresh air for all who attended the sold out show.
Acting as her own opener, Hemlocke Springs stepped out onto the stage as “The Girl”. This unique way to open a show was something I had never seen before, and I was instantly intrigued. Telling the tale of a re-imagined version of Snow White, Hemlocke Springs artfully weaved authenticity and passion into every line. As the audience reacted, so did Hemlocke, upping the dramatics and playing along so that the experience was catered directly to the audience in front of her. It was a wonderfully well-thought-out way to set the tone for the stunning performance that was soon to follow.
Not long after, it was time for the main event. When the lights dimmed again and the drummer and bassist appeared sporting matching bob style wigs, the crowd began to buzz with anticipation. Then, as all eyes locked in, there she was. Dancing, easing onto the stage like she owned it, there was Hemlocke Springs. Rocking a masquerade style face covering, a pirate-like hat, and a reflective fringed jacket, it was apparent that she was no stranger to being in the spotlight. With that kind of confidence and grooviness from the get go, there was no denying we were in for a great show.
Amidst theatrical props like fairytale books and swords, Hemlocke Springs’ genuine love for her fans shone through like a gemstone in the moonlight. Throughout the set, there were moments where she stopped to accept a hat that a fan had crocheted her (which she proceeded to wear in place of the pirate hat) and lead the room in singing happy birthday to Grace, who seemed to have had her day made. To see an artist focused on uplifting the community they know that they’ve created with their platform was something truly heartwarming.
A stand out moment for me came at the end of the set, when Hemlocke performed a favorite of mine, girlfriend. Clearly I wasn’t alone in this, as everyone in the sold out venue seemed to know every word. Even in the very back, where I chose to stand as an avid people watcher, there were fans dancing with each other and having the time of their lives all the same as those who had waited hours to be up against the barricade. Being able to capture every single person in a sold out room takes talent, and Hemlocke Springs did so like she was born to.
There’s a few stops left on her North American run. If you’re not a fan already, you might just leave the show as a new one. My suggestion is to get yourself to a show, and experience The Apple Tree Under the Sea for yourself. It’s an experience that you will keep with you for a lifetime.
