An Acoustic Romantic Masterpiece (Jonah Marais "Heaven" Review)

Written by: Giulia Campora

Ex-Why Don’t We vocalist Jonah Marais takes a leap of faith with his emotional ballad "Heaven," his second solo single from the upcoming mixtape, set to release on June 28th. The "Twisted Lullaby" singer shares how his girlfriend’s eyes make him feel “alive” and how she is “his piece of heaven.”

At first glance, "Heaven" seems like a classic ballad, but by the middle of the song, the beat picks up with a blend of acoustic and pop background music. The first verse showcases Marais’ beautiful songwriting skills as he describes how important the little moments with his girlfriend are, like the “too big” sweatshirt that “fits her” or how they “spend the night telling stories ‘bout her childhood.”

The chorus highlights Marais' vocal talent and the sound he wants to showcase to fans and casual listeners. The harmonies and appealing acoustic beat have stolen my heart. His vocals are incredible and demonstrate what a fantastic artist he truly is.

In the second verse, Marais explains how the feeling of his girlfriend’s lips is good for him, how she looks like “an angel in the morning,” and how his feelings for her are growing stronger to the point that “it feels like floating when I am falling for you.”

The song concludes with the same chorus, and the beat slowly dies down. Marais transforms something seemingly simple into something magical, relatable to anyone in love. Marais truly has the potential to become one of the best pop male voices out there.

Marais' mixtape releases on June 28th, and his tour, “The Young And Optimistic,” has tickets already on sale, with VIP tickets sold out in most cities. The tour will begin in Portland on August 22nd and conclude in Minneapolis on September 26th. I definitely recommend checking him out and buying GA tickets for a tour stop to hear his voice live!
