Next Wave: What inspired you to pursue music?

I’ve been writing music since I was 15 and never really thought about it as a career. I really just wrote because I enjoyed writing and it was the perfect outlet for me. Over time, as I wrote more, performed more, and started to release music, it just kinda happened. I don’t think there was a big “aha” moment necessarily; there isn’t something specific that’s coming to mind at the moment. I just really love making music and I’d love to do it forever. And seeing the effect I’ve been able to make on people has kept me inspired to continue pursuing more and more.

Next Wave: Who are your musical influences or role models?

I’ve got a bunch.

Frank Sinatra and Brendon Urie (of Panic! At the Disco) taught me how to sing. Just listening to them over and over was hugely influential to the way I sing. Over the last few years, Tamino has had a big influence on my singing too.

In terms of lyrics, Julia Michaels is definitely a huge influence of mine. She literally cannot write a bad song.

Additionally: Lorde, Lauv, Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, and Radiohead. They’ve all made a big impact on the way I perceive and write music.

Next Wave: What's the most challenging aspect of breaking into the music industry?

Honestly, there’s a lot of challenging aspects. I’d say some of the biggest challenges I’ve had are a lack of funding and a lack of connections. Without funding, everything takes forever to make. And the right connections can get you into the right rooms. So they’re both pretty important things to have. As an independent artist, it’s not an easy road to success. But I don’t plan to stop until I make it.

Next Wave: How do you go about promoting your music and building your fanbase?

I think one of my strengths is networking. Word-of-mouth has led to a lot of people finding out about me. I’ve also spent some time building up fans through advertising on social media, and by posting Reels and TikToks.

Next Wave: How has technology and the internet impacted your music career?

I think it’s made things a bit easier. I’m lucky to have a space on the internet where people can find me. I’m lucky to have my fans who wouldn’t have known I existed if not for the Internet.

Next Wave: Do you have any advice for other up-and-coming musicians trying to make it in the industry?

I think I’d say: “Don’t stop.” I think dreams are worth chasing, and the world needs more good music in it. Talent exists for a reason; not to be hidden in your room. The world is missing the piece of art that only you can provide it with. That’s what I would say.

Next Wave: What are your long-term goals and aspirations?

I’d like to change the world. I’d like for my music to be known on a worldwide scale and effect positive change for people. So that they’ll feel less alone. And to empower them to share their own art. I’d also love to headline Madison Square Garden. That’s gonna be fun.

Next Wave: Can you share a memorable moment from your musical journey so far?

About two years ago, I did a last minute acoustic pop-up show at a random bus stop in New York City at 3 AM. I announced it on my stories an hour before it happened. And 20 fans showed up. And sang along to every word. We ended up singing my songs together and hanging out until 5 AM, watching the sun come up. It was absolutely wild.

Next Wave: Can you share a little about your creative process and how you come up with new ideas for songs?

I’ll usually sit by my piano or guitar (or sometimes even my ukulele) and play until something grabs my attention. In this process, I trash a lot of ideas. But sometimes, something special will appear. And then I keep writing until it becomes a song. Other times, a melody or lyric will just pop into my head. And then I try to run to an instrument and see if it can become a song. Usually, a song is inspired by a current event in my life, a past event in my life, or a story I made up.

Next Wave: What song, EP or album of yours would you recommend to someone who is listening to your music for the first time?

This is a tough question. It really depends on the person. If you enjoy meaningful ballads, I’d say to listen to “Van Gogh.” It’s probably the best song I’ve ever written. But if you enjoy pop music, I’d recommend my song “drugs.” It’s a sad bop.
